Ingram Micro encourages UK resellers with promotional cloud campaign

Source: www.pcr-online.biz --- Wednesday, August 31, 2016
Ingram Micro is preparing to target UK resellers by rolling out a series of promotions. These promotions are being launched with the intention of enticing resellers that are unfamiliar with Microsoft’s cloud services, along with enabling existing partners to do more via the company's automated cloud platform. In addition, the Microsoft Cloud Service Provider (CSP) program aims to make it easier for users to purchase next generation Microsoft products distributed via Cloud. Apay Obang-Oyway, director, Cloud Northern Europe at Ingram Micro Cloud said: “What came out loud and clear from Microsoft’s WPC was its clear ‘CSP first’ opportunity and that is something we actively support. We have seen over the past year strong appetite for CSP amongst end customers within our partner base for a myriad of reasons. This certainly continues as the move to cloud continues to drive digital transformation across all industries. Not only are we seeing our existing partners really beginning to scale their cloud proposition we are seeing new resellers coming on board as partners look to enhance their propositions to include Cloud as part of the comprehensive value in IT.” Partners will be able to amend and manage solutions for more than one end-user from one pane as well as adding new features, customers or services and download billing data. Apay added ”It is our goal to not only bring on board new resellers onto the Microsoft CSP program, but to ...

New Surface Pro 4, Surface Book updates give both a battery boost

Source: www.techradar.com --- Wednesday, August 31, 2016
Microsoft has once again issued a fresh set of updates for the Surface Book and Surface Pro 4 , which bring identical benefits to these hybrids, the principal boon being improved battery longevity. There are four driver updates in total: one for the Surface Management Engine, another for the Surface UEFI, one for Surface Integration, along with a driver update for Surface Integration Service Device. The first two tweaked drivers are both designed to ensure better stability and enhance performance when switching between different power states on your Surface. Balance of power And the final update addresses the default power plan, which is 'Balanced', and ensures this stays correctly set whenever Windows is updated (given that this is a post-Anniversary Update set of fixes, we can only guess that said recent major OS update broke this power setting in some respect – it wouldn't be the only issue caused , that's for sure). But the most interesting tweak is the third update for Surface Integration which Microsoft says "improves the device usability and battery life". That (obviously) suggests overall battery life is going to be better, which is always very welcome. Back in June, the company also boosted battery life with a Surface Book update , although this was aimed at optimizing battery usage only when the device was in standby mode. Some Surface Pro 3 users (a minority according to Microsoft) have had far more to complain about o ...

There’s a lot of information online about millennials. Some of it is anecdotal, some of it is statistical. Yet if you look at the authors writing on it, you won’t find many millennials. Windows 10 Mobile review: Small fixes show this plucky phone OS won’t give up

Source: http://ift.tt/29WUARh --- Wednesday, August 31, 2016
A new Wallet app and wireless Continuum are good improvements, but the future hangs on just a few phones. Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile running the Microsoft Wallet application. Credit: Mark Hachman A year ago, we characterized Microsoft’s Windows 10 Mobile as a second-tier OS, but not one that’s second rate. Fast-forward nine months later to the Windows 10 Mobile Anniversary Update, and we’re still seeing signs of slow progress—but perhaps not quite fast enough for an operating system the market has largely given up on. My impressions of the Windows 10 AU are of tweaking, patching, and catching up. The most important additions include the new Wallet app, which finally allows tap-to-pay NFC payments for Windows 10 AU smartphones—something that both Android and iOS have had for years. The simplified Skype Preview app debuts, as it also has on PCs. An existing app, Continuum, now projects screens wirelessly onto a PC without the need for a Display Dock, and Windows 10 now exchanges messages and notifications between the phone and PC better than ever. Otherwise, there are other, minor adjustments, scattered throughout the updated OS. Fortunately, these new updates are rolling out to all Windows phones faster than expected, even “carrier-locked” models. Consider: Two phones—AT&T’s Lumia 640 and Verizon’s Lumia 735—were upgraded to vanilla Windows 10 just months ago, in June . If you don’t have it, however, and absolutely want the Win ...

Blame the User, Not the Technology

Source: www.workforce.com --- Wednesday, August 31, 2016
To put it mildly, HR technology is red hot these days. And of all the human resources specialties, recruiting technology is most mature and truly on fire. From Microsoft’s acquisition of LinkedIn to the continuing build-out of functionality included in applicant tracking systems, the recruiting technology scene has never held more promise. Look at any mature recruiting technology platform and you’ll see things that would have scared recruiters 15 years ago. Ability to run deep searches for candidates across the internet and load them into your ATS? Check. Ability to track candidate activity via CRM functionality and create talent pools to develop relationships and speak directly to specialties that present the most difficulty recruiting? We have that, too! The list goes on related to what recruiting technology can provide. But there’s one pretty important thing the technology can’t do. Force your recruiters to use the technology. It’s true; for the technology to work, HR and talent acquisition leaders have to force their teams to use it. Which sucks, because it sets up incredibly talented HR/TA leaders for an uncomfortable confrontation that doesn’t feel like leadership. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some great HR and talent acquisition leaders in the role of a consultant. One of the things I’ve learned is that our industry has some incredibly talented people at all levels on recruiting teams like the one at your company. R ...

Intel's latest CPUs will only support Windows 10

Source: www.techradar.com --- Wednesday, August 31, 2016
Following Intel's official unveiling of its new Kaby Lake (seventh-generation) processors, and a rash of incoming notebooks set to use the CPUs, Microsoft has confirmed what it announced earlier this year – that only Windows 10 will support this new processor. And it's not just Kaby Lake either, but all future processors such as rival AMD's incoming Zen . Back at the start of the year, Microsoft said that: "Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform on Intel's upcoming 'Kaby Lake' silicon, Qualcomm's upcoming '8996' silicon, and AMD's upcoming 'Bristol Ridge' silicon." When PC World asked Microsoft to confirm that this was still the case, a company spokeswoman replied: "As new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support." "This enables us to focus on deep integration between Windows and the silicon, while maintaining maximum reliability and compatibility with previous generations of platform and silicon," she added, restating what Terry Myerson said at the beginning of this year. Intel and AMD on board Both Intel and AMD representatives who were contacted also confirmed that the policy was in place for future processors like Kaby Lake and Zen. AMD said its CPU roadmap was "fully aligned with Microsoft's software strategy", and Intel clarified: "No, Intel will not be updating Win 7/8 drivers for 7th Gen Intel Core [Kaby Lake] per Microsoft's support policy ...

Bing angers Saudi Arabia with terrorist slur

Source: www.techeye.net --- Wednesday, August 31, 2016
Microsoft’s translation function on Bing has angered a fair few Saudi Arabians by mistranslating the Arabic word Daesh into English as “Saudi Arabia”. For those who came in late, Daesh is the name of the Arabic death cult also known as the Islamic State, which is better known for its head lopping antics and tendency to murder innocents in the name of their God. The news spread on social media and a campaign was quickly organised in Saudi Arabia calling for a boycott of Microsoft products. Redmond fixed the issue and has formally apologised to Saudi officials for the blunder. According to Dr Mamdouh Najjar, VP and national technology officer for Microsoft in Saudi Arabia, the error occurred because Bing Translator has a crowdsourcing function – if a large group of people suggest a translation, then it becomes listed as a possible answer. There are enough people in the US who believe that Daesh has been funded by Saudi Arabia and who would think that it would be a laugh to change Bing’s meaning. However, while there have been cases of Saudi Arabians supporting Daesh, Saudi Arabians fighting for Daesh and a common belief in Wahhabism which is an extreme flavour of Sunni, the Saudis are actually fighting Daesh.   ...

Indians notebook: Right-hander Danny Salazar placed on paternity list; Indians, RubberDucks extend partnership

Source: www.ohio.com --- Tuesday, August 30, 2016
CLEVELAND: The Indians on Monday placed starting pitcher Danny Salazar on Major League Baseball’s paternity list and recalled relief pitcher Shawn Armstrong from Triple-A Columbus. Salazar is able to remain on that list for three days, meaning he’ll still make his regularly scheduled start against the Miami Marlins during the Indians’ upcoming weekend series. “They’re in town and I think it’s supposed to be [Monday],” said Indians manager Terry Francona. “So, Armstrong is here to help our bullpen. And Danny will just fall right into his next start.” Salazar recently tossed the first strong outing since returning from the disabled list with elbow inflammation, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out 10 in 5⅓ innings in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers. After two tough starts in which he was hit hard early, Salazar’s start gave the Indians optimism heading into September that he’s bounced back from his short stint on the disabled list. Four more years The Indians and the RubberDucks extended their partnership on Monday, agreeing to a four-year player development contract extension that will keep the club’s Double-A affiliate in Akron through the 2020 season. “[RubberDucks owner and CEO] Ken Babby and his team have gone over the top in making Akron a top-of-the-line facility for our players, our staff and the tremendous fans who come to see them play,” Indians director of player development Carter Hawkins said in a rel ...

Minnesotan To Meet: Log Roller Abby Hoeshler

Source: minnesota.cbslocal.com --- Tuesday, August 30, 2016
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — Some families spend their summers around the campfire. Or maybe the kids go to summer camp for a week or two, be it Basketball camp, hockey camp, or art camp. But have you ever spent a summer day log rolling? It’s a sport that maybe you’ve watched at a fair, but trying it out is a whole different story. Abby Hoeshler comes from a long line of world champion log rollers. Her mother is a seven-time world log rolling champion. Hoeshler is making it her mission to make sure that athletes across the world have an opportunity to try the sport she loves so much, and that’s what makes her a Minnesotan to Meet. Sunshine, swimming and plenty of sand is what you would expect to see at Cedar Lake for quick stop at Hidden Beach, not log rolling. Hoeshler is just trying to make sure others aren’t afraid to try the sport she loves so much. “My family they weren’t log rollers or lumber barrens. My mom grew up in Hayward, Wisconsin, where the world championships were held,” she said. Hoeshler learned how to roll at her local YMCA in Wisconsin. “I think there is something about balancing on a spinning log in the water. … It really feels like you accomplish something when you learn how to maneuver the log in the water,” she said. After college at the University of Vermont, she wanted to pursue her goal of making Minnesota the mecca of log rolling, so she moved to Minneapolis and started Key Log Rolling . “It’s exciting, it’s ea ...

Failing that, can I describe the page layout programmatically and "insert" each label with a unique number before sending the job to the printer? Please let me know if I can provide further details. Australia, Taiwan, South Korea warn citizens to avoid travel to Singapore

Source: www.geo.tv --- Tuesday, August 30, 2016
SINGAPORE: Australia, Taiwan and South Korea advised pregnant women and those attempting to get pregnant to avoid travel to Singapore after an outbreak of the Zika virus infected more than 50 people in the city-state. The outbreak and the warnings come as a potential blow to tourism in one of the world's busiest travel hubs, which is already struggling to recover from a slump amid tepid global growth. Singapore reported its first case of locally-transmitted Zika at the weekend, and the number of reported infections of the mosquito-borne virus has since jumped to 56. At least three dozen of those have since made a full recovery. The Zika virus was detected in Brazil last year and has since spread across the Americas. It poses a risk to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects. It has been linked in Brazil to more than 1,800 cases of microcephaly, a rare birth defect where babies are born with abnormally small heads and brains. The 56 confirmed cases in Singapore include only one woman. Taiwan, Australia and South Korea advised pregnant women and those planning pregnancy to postpone trips to Singapore. Those returning from the country should avoid pregnancy for two months. South Korean travelers will receive text messages with the warning when they arrive in Singapore. Malaysia and Indonesia, Singapore's closest neighbors, have stepped up protective measures following the outbreak, introducing thermal scanners at ai ...

Red Sox Notebook: Red Sox pitcher Drew Pomeranz relies on his brand of curveball

Source: www.bostonherald.com --- Tuesday, August 30, 2016
It all starts with his curveball, a pitch that can drop more than a foot as it dives through the strike zone. And he throws it with a grip that he’s sure nobody else in Baseball will use. “I was 11 years old and have the same curveball I have now,” Red Sox lefty Drew Pomeranz said before last night’s 9-4 win against the Tampa Bay Rays. “So I was literally striking everybody out. I always threw hard, and I was bigger than all the kids, so I would throw hard and throw that curveball and no one could hit me.” ...

Reports: Arsenal Allow Jack Wilshere To Leave On Loan Before Transfer Window Closes

Source: http://ift.tt/ZfVevA --- Tuesday, August 30, 2016
Arsenal have made a big call to allow Jack Wilshere to leave the club on loan in pursuit of first-team Football. Wilshere has been limited to two substitute appearances for the Gunners this season after having his pre-season impinged by his troublesome ankles/knees/entire lower body for the umpteenth time. The 26-year-old midfielder made three appearances for England at Euro 2016 but looked far from full fitness, having only made one Premier League start due to injury the season prior. Perhaps a little strange is Arsenal only giving themselves 48 hours to find a suitor for Wilshere, with the transfer deadline passing at 11pm on Wednesday evening. For the record, Valencia and Juventus are being mentioned in passing. Could be interesting, this one – right up until the point he breaks down again and all burgeoning optimism is immediately rendered moot again. ...

Indians place SP Danny Salazar on Paternity List; Indians, RubberDucks extend partnership

Source: www.ohio.com --- Tuesday, August 30, 2016
The Indians on Monday placed starting pitcher Danny Salazar on Major League Baseball’s Paternity List and recalled relief pitcher Shawn Armstrong from Triple-A Columbus. And Danny will just fall right into his next start.” Salazar recently tossed the first strong outing since returning from the disabled list with elbow inflammation, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out 10 in 5 /3 innings pitched in Sunday’s 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers. “[RubberDucks owner and CEO] Ken Babby and his team have gone over the top in making Akron a top-of-the-line facility for our players, our staff and the tremendous fans who come to see them play,” said Indians director of player development Carter Hawkins in a rele ...

PolitiFact Says Clinton’s Claims About the ‘Trump Effect’ of Bullying in Schools Are Mostly True

Source: www.mediaite.com - Friday, August 26, 2016
Hillary Clinton has been attacking Donald Trump all week for hiring people who are considered by some to be racists. She’s been hitting him for catering to the alt-right and for promoting messages of intolerance and even cruelty. One of the things she said about him was that there has been a “Trump effect” in schools that involves more and more reported instances of bullying. Supposedly, children hear his divisive messages, go to school, and pick on kids who aren’t like them. Is that true? PolitiFact actually says that for the most part, it is! Clinton, citing ‘Trump Effect,’ says teachers are reporting more bullying in schools. Mostly True. https://t.co/TXlB3Fp1ZL — PolitiFact (@PolitiFact) August 26, 2016 Essentially, it boils down to this: The Southern Poverty Law Center released a report in April that used anecdotal evidence from teachers to support the idea of the Trump Effect. That was not a scientific survey (nor did it claim to be), but because Clinton’s quote was, “Parents and teachers are already worrying about what they call the ‘Trump Effect.’ They report that bullying and harassment are on the rise in our schools, especially targeting students of color, Muslims, and immigrants,” she was right. The anecdotal reports are exactly what she was talking about. The message is in line with one of the ads she released earlier this summer, too, which depicted kids watching televisions as some of Trump’s most shocking quotes pl

The long and twisted tale of the Nibbler arcade game

Source: boingboing.net - Friday, August 26, 2016
Never heard of Nibbler? You’re not alone. Nibbler was one of a handful of arcade games produced in the early 80’s by Rock-Ola Manufacturing Company, a company better known for its stylish jukeboxes. Designed by programmers Joe Ulowetz and John Jaugilas, Nibbler is the bastard lovechild of the Pac-Man and the cell phone game Snake, which you may remember playing on your 2001 Nokia handheld. Oft-maligned by classic arcade gamers as less worthy than games like Donkey Kong, Dig Dug or Defender, Nibbler is actually a fun and fairly addictive game which starts out easy and steadily ramps up difficulty as the player advances through levels of mazes. Since only about 1,500 Nibblers rolled off of the assembly line, it was a somewhat rare find in the arcade scene of the day, especially when compared to the hundreds of thousands of Pac-Man cabinets that proliferated, yet interest in Nibbler has endured into the modern era, spearheaded by a coterie of die-hard Nibbler fanatics. You see, what made Nibbler special is that it held a secret, it was the first game of its era that could be played to one billion points and beyond. The secret was discovered by Tom Asaki, who at the time was an undergraduate at Montana State University studying physics. The founding member of the “Bozeman Think Tank,” Tom had been one of the early arcade pioneers who cracked Ms. Pac-Man (on which he held world records) and he quickly mastered Nibbler. Apple issues update after cyber weapon captured

Source: http://ift.tt/1aoZXzE --- Friday, August 26, 2016
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug 27 — Apple iPhone owners yesterday were urged to install a quickly released security update after a sophisticated attack on an Emirati dissident exposed vulnerabilities targeted by cyber arms dealers. Researchers at Lookout mobile security firm and Citizen Lab at the University of Toronto said they uncovered a fierce, three-pronged cyber attack targeting a dissident’s iPhone “that subverts even Apple’s strong security environment.” Lookout and Citizen Lab worked with Apple on an iOS patch to defend against what was called “Trident” because of its triad of attack methods, the researchers said in a joint blog post. “We were made aware of this vulnerability and immediately fixed it with iOS 9.3.5,” Apple said in a released statement. Trident is used in spyware referred to as Pegasus, which a Citizen Lab investigation showed was made by an Israel-based organization called NSO Group. It was acquired by the US firm Francisco Partners Management six years ago, according to Lookout and Citizen. Lookout referred to Pegasus as the most sophisticated attack it has seen, sneakily accessing calls, cameras, email, passwords, apps and more on iPhones. The spyware was detected when used against Ahmed Mansoor, a human rights activist in the United Arab Emirates, who has been repeatedly targeted using spyware. San Francisco Giants inching closer to a record they really don’t want

Source: larrybrownsports.com --- Friday, August 26, 2016
Entering the All-Star break, the San Francisco Giants had the best record in Baseball at 57-33. Since the All-Star break, they rest comfortably in the Major League Baseball cellar with a record of 12-25. Despite Matt Moore’s near no-hitter in a 4-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night, the Giants’ current slump has them inching towards an all-time record. And not just any record, but an exclusive record that they want absolutely no part of. If San Francisco can’t get things turned around over the next 35 games, they will have unfortunate honor of becoming the only team in Baseball history to do a complete 180 after the All-Star break. The Giants are on pace to be the first team ever with the best record before the All-Star break and the worst record after it ( @EliasSports ) — ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) August 26, 2016 The team’s current slump defies explanation. There’s really no way around that, and no one on the team can make any sense of what’s happening. “I really don’t feel this is going to be who we are. To me, I think we’re a much better team than this. We’re going to figure it out. We have to figure it out. It’s just going to happen,” first baseman Brandon Belt, who was batting .302 at the mid-way point but only .213 since, told the Los Angeles Times earlier this week . “It has to be one of those things where we put it all together. Spotify Is Burying Tracks From Musicians Who Give Exclusives To Apple and Tidal

Source: techbait.net --- Friday, August 26, 2016
The music-streaming market is very competitive these days, especially since Apple released Apple Music last year. In retaliation for musicians giving Apple exclusive access to their new music, Spotify has reportedly been making their songs harder to find on its service. Bloomberg reports: “Artists who have given Apple exclusive access to new music have been told they won’t be able to get their tracks on featuring playlists once the songs become available on Spotify, said the people [familiar with the strategy], who declined to be identified discussing the steps. Those artists have also found their songs buried in the search rankings of Spotify, the world’s largest music-streaming service, the people said. Spotify said it doesn’t alter search rankings. Spotify has been using such practices for about a year, one of the people said, though others said the efforts have escalated over the past few months. Artists who have given exclusives to Tidal, the streaming service run by Jay Z, have also retaliated against, the person said, declining to identify specific musicians.” Read more of this story at Slashdot. UNM football ticket sales finally looking up

Source: krqe.com --- Friday, August 26, 2016
ALBUQUERQUE N.M. (KRQE) – The University of New Mexico is less than a week away from the first Lobo Football game. The team is coming off a winning reason, the first time in nearly a decade, and the program is still figuring out ways to pack the stadium. It fits nearly 40,000 fans. In past years, the program has had a rough time filling the stands but Drew Ingraham with UNM’s Athletic Department said things are looking up. “We were below 9,000 season tickets this time last year,” Ingraham said. As of Friday afternoon, the department has sold 9,121 season tickets. Although it’s not a huge jump, Ingraham said the department is just looking for any kind of increase that will move the program forward. “I don’t think we’re where we want to be,” he said. “I think this department, this program wants to be at a higher level with our season ticket holders, our revenue numbers and just overall attendance numbers and all those things go hand-in-hand.” Ingraham said the program has added a few incentives to help increase attendance. This is the first year fans will be able to purchase alcohol during the game. Fans will also now be able to go onto the field after the game to take pictures; it’s all part of the plan to have more fan interaction. But everyone knows Lobo fans really want one thing: “I want to see the Lobos winning,” Danielle Roach said. “Obviously you want to see UNM winning, but what happens, happens,” Matthew Narvaiz said. ‘Desperate’?: CNN’s Baldwin Confronts McCain Opponent for Attacking Him on His Age

Source: www.mediaite.com - Friday, August 26, 2016
In the past few days, John McCain ‘s Republican primary opponent Kelli Ward has been getting some national media attention for her attacks on McCain over his age. Ward is a physician and she has been armchair-diagnosing McCain and his state of mind , saying things like “There are things that happen physiologically with the body and the mind. One of them is control over your anger and he’s already known as an angry man.” A big theme of her campaign has been to #RetireMcCain. Ward called into CNN this afternoon and Brooke Baldwin immediately confronted her on whether the attack is fair when there’s no Constitutional age limit on being too old to serve. Ward pointed to past comments by McCain mulling retirement and argued the Senate needs fresh blood. Former Colleagues Mourn Educator Killed In Afghan Attack

Source: sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com - Friday, August 26, 2016
SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) — A man killed in a terrorist attack in Afghanistan spent part of his higher education career at schools in Santa Clara and Monterey counties, where his former colleagues are mourning his death. Naqib Ahmad Khpulwak was one of 16 people killed Wednesday in the attack at American University in Kabul, Afghanistan, where he was an assistant law professor. Khpulwak was a visiting scholar at Stanford Law School for six months in 2013 and a Fulbright scholar. He worked as a full-time instructor at American University until 2015 when he switched to an adjunct status and took a job as a manager on rule of law programs at the United States Institute of Peace in Kabul, Stanford officials said. “Our sympathies and best wishes go out to all of those affected by this terrible act, and to all those who had worked closely with Naqib. It is a heartbreaking loss,” Stanford officials said in a statement. “Naqib was always emphatic that we — Afghans who are about the future of the country — cannot back down to insurgents and criminals who threaten a future of possibility,” Stanford Law Professor Erik Jensen said in a statement. “His death is an enormous loss to AUAF and to Afghanistan. My thoughts are with his family,” said Jensen, an AUAF board member. From 2010 to 2012, Khpulwak went to the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey where he took courses in the Intensive English Program and English Preparation

The Rotting Apple

Source: www.thestranger.com - Friday, August 26, 2016
The Forthcoming Closure of Red Apple, One of Seattle's Few Black-Loved Supermarkets by Charles Mudede G entrification is never a simple matter. You can argue that it simply removes poor people from a neighborhood and replaces them with those in the middle and upper classes. But the process itself is often motivated by good intentions or progressive ideas. The future plans of the Promenade 23 shopping center, located on 23rd Avenue and South Jackson Street, offer an excellent example of such good intentions. When Paul Allen bought the shopping center from Weingarten Realty this spring for $30.9 million, many predicted that a good number of the businesses there, many of them small businesses owned by black Americans, were going to go. Six months later, it looks like one of those businesses will be the supermarket, Red Apple, which has served the neighborhood, a predominantly black community, for over 25 years. To this day, the Red Apple (which is a regional supermarket chain) in Promenade 23 is one of the few places in this town that sells the parts of animals most whites do not usually buy or eat: pig ears, the stomachs of cows, the sheer skins of chickens. This business does not appear to be in the future that Paul Allen's company, Vulcan, has in mind. "Yeah, we were told it's over and we'll have to move out of here by June," explained an employee to me, "and between then and now, we are pretty much going month to month. Everyone

Stephen Cardullo’s independent baseball path reaches major leagues

Source: www.denverpost.com --- Friday, August 26, 2016
WASHINGTON — When Stephen Cardullo took the field at Nationals Park on Friday, in the line-drive path of reigning MVP Bryce Harper, he might as well have been a million miles from his Baseball past. The 28-year-old Cardullo, who made his major-league debut at first base to open the Rockies’ three-game series against the NL East leaders, earned his promotion by hitting .308 with 17 home runs for Triple-A Albuquerque this season. Before that, though, Cardullo spent the previous four seasons plying his craft in independent leagues, far from the bright lights of the majors. In 2014 and 2015, he played for the Rockland (N.Y.) Boulders of the Canadian-American Association. The former All-American at Florida State, a 24th-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010, was playing in towns you could only reach with a compass and a prayer. Yet, there he was Friday, sandwiched between Charlie Blackmon and Nolan Arenado, hitting second in the Rockies lineup. “It’s always a big deal, making a major-league debut,” Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. “But when you take into account the path Stephen took to get here, it’s really, really special. It’s a great story of perseverance and overcoming the odds. He’s earned it.” The Diamondbacks released Cardullo after two seasons of rookie ball. Over the next four seasons, he played for three teams in two different independent leagues. The Rockies signed him to a minor-league contract in January with an ...

Fantom Ransomware Mimics Windows Update Screen

Source: news.softpedia.com --- Friday, August 26, 2016
Ransomware often tries to disguise its malicious behavior by various tricks. The latest method observed is from a new variant called Fantom, which shows a fake Windows Update screen, while in reality, it's encrypting the user's files. The ransomware, spotted for the first time only a few days ago by AVG security researcher Jakub Kroustek, is coded on top of EDA2, a ransomware building kit that was open-sourced last year, but eventually taken down. EDA2 contained flaws that allowed researchers to obtain the decryption keys from the ransomware's C&C server. According to analysis from Bleeping Computer , those flaws aren't there anymore, meaning one of the Fantom coders must have found and fixed them. Fantom distributed as a fake Windows critical update... ( read more ) ...
