High school boys basketball: Lone Peak makes easy work of Syracuse in first round matchup

OREM — When the final whistle blew Monday night at UVU’s UCCU Center, the Lone Peak Knights stood well-above the competition, high enough in fact to justify any and all preseason hype. Led by Chantry Ross, the Knights pummeled the Syracuse Titans 81-56, for the stress-free, first round victory. “We got into a good rhythm tonight,” Lone Peak coach David Evans said. “This was a good way to start the state tournament.” Ross led the Knights with 17 points, while four other Lone Peak players managed to find their way into double figure scoring. Maxwell McGrath scored 15 points, Nathan Harkness and Mex Brenchley each scored 13, and Steven Ashworth chipped in 11 for the victorious Knights. Despite the lopsided final score, it was a contest early. Through the first quarter, the Titans appeared to be more than a match for the top-seeded Knights. Lone Peak struck first, with point guard Chantry Ross and his four quick points, setting the tone. And yet, Syracuse had a floor general of their own. Brock Gilbert was a force in the first, and as he set up his teammates for easy baskets, the Titans managed to keep pace. Lone Peak created a small amount of separation towards the end of the first period, to the tune of four points, but even that couldn’t be maintained as Kaedon Nye scored for Syracuse right before the buzzer.
