Panoramas of the City

Source: explorestlouis.com --- Tuesday, October 31, 2017
In the first half of the 20th century, St. Louis photographers used panoramic photography to capture moments from our city’s history—everything from Charles Lindbergh’s homecoming and Baseball games to protests and disaster relief. The stunning, immersive images they created celebrate St. Louis’s highs, acknowledge its lows, and document the day-to-day lives of its people.   Panoramas of the City will use over 50 of these photographs to bring St. Louis’s history to life. Through these images—several of which will be blown up so large that you’ll feel like you can walk right through them—you’ll be able to experience St. Louis’s past in a way you never have before. You’ll learn new stories about the city’s rich and diverse history, stories that have been all but forgotten. You’ll see unfamiliar images of familiar moments, images that give us a new perspective on well-known stories from our past. You’ll also learn about the process of panoramic photography and have an opportunity to submit panoramas of the St. Louis you know and love.
In case anyone forgot, I just wanted to remind you. Salty Giants fan here. My two favorite Baseball teams are the San Francisco Giants, and whoever is playing the Los Angeles Dodgers. So that means that for the remainder of the week, I’m a huge Houston Astros fan. Let’s be clear: LA sucks. There’s little to nothing redeeming about it. Almost all their fans suck. Fair-weather, bandwagon, water-stealing fans. Laker/Dodger whatever. They’re all the same. You can literally tell most LA sports fans by the vacant, 1000 yard stare look they have. Just waiting to see which bandwagon to jump on, which car flag to fly, which inning they need to leave to beat the traffic on the 405. That’s right, I said “The 405”, because they even refer to their dumb highways all dumbly like that. So yeah, I hope Kershaw and Roberts and even that Game of Thronesy bearded ginger wonder hitter they have go down in a big ball of flames to the Astros. Just don’t ask for our water to put out the flames. ...

Getting Closer

Source: cervinupcards.blogspot.com --- Monday, October 30, 2017
Before we get to my post, let me just say that that was an excellent Baseball game yesterday this morning. TBH I'm kinda sad that the Dodgers lost, but it was a fun game to watch regardless. I personally hope for more five hour, extra inning, bad bullpen games in Game Six and Seven. Anyway it took a while but I finally got my hands on Luis Torrens' rookie cards in 2017 Topps Update. I've kept up with posts all throughout our corner of the blogopshere in hopes of seeing someone else pull his cards and blog about him, only to find that he managed to evade pretty much everybody's packs. Anyway by now you all should be aware of what Topps Update is. It's a jumbled mess where you appear to be able to pull more shortprints than parallels. This does not suit me as I've managed to track down some of the parallels (including some big ones) but all the while others have yet to surface. Given how the print run appears to be huge for the product is a whole (or in the Toys R Us parallel's case, nonexistent), I might have to pounce on the first parallels I see in some cases. How wonderful. The base card above came courtesy of a case break that P-Town Tom signed me up for. Big thanks to Tom. I received 22 base cards that were pulled between two cases. I'll take every copy I can get. In the event that I see Torrens again one day these will be offered to him. Now here are the rest of my recent pickups. This vintage stock parallel is honestly one ...

Top 7 baseball films

Source: borepatch.blogspot.com --- Monday, October 30, 2017
It's World Series time, and so here are the top 7 Baseball films.  These may tide you over until spring training: (Not in the running) Field Of Dreams.  I just can't get over the implausible premise ("Build it and they will come"), and this is my list.  Other than that, it's a fine film.  I think you can watch this with your kids and grandkids, assuming you want to watch it.  But I think I fell asleep watching it so I can't really remember. 7. Angels In The Outfield.  Sure, it's as predictable as a sunny summer day.  Sure, it's made by Disney.  Sure, it has complete games getting pitched long after they stopped pitching complete games.  It's a fun romp that is 100% kid friendly.  Quotable quotes: "It could happen!". 6. A League Of Their Own.  Remember nostalgia?  Quotable quote: "There's no crying in Baseball!  You know why?  Because there's no crying in Baseball!"  You can watch this with your kids or grandkids. 5. Major League.  This is slapstick and entirely predictable but funny as hell.  Do not watch this with your kids or grandkids.  Quotable quote: "Just a reminder, fans, comin' up is our 'Die-hard Night' here at the stadium. Free admission to anyone who was actually alive the last time the Indians won a pennant." 4. Sandlot.  This is a coming of age story reminiscent of the old saying:  In spring, a young man's thoughts lightly turn to thoughts of  love  Baseball.  Quotable quote: "You're killing me, Smalls!" So the postseason baseball are juiced.....

Source: http://ift.tt/1pzk6Ok --- Monday, October 30, 2017
I guess so.... Quote: Scroll back up to restore default view. HOUSTON – In the hours leading up to Game 5 of the World Series, a Houston Astros relief pitcher went to the team’s bullpen in right field to conduct an experiment. He dabbed a bit of super glue on his index and middle fingers, let it dry slightly and picked up one of the embattled baseballs that became a front-and-center story Sunday during the game’s biggest event. Sports Illustrated’s Tom Verducci reported Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers pitchers have complained of slick balls this postseason, adding scrutiny to a vital component of the game that has been accused of fueling the massive home run spike over the last 2½ seasons. The Astros pitcher resorted to super glue to see if it could help him better grip the ball. What happened instead was small white pieces of the ball’s leather hide flaked off and stuck to his fingers. Perhaps this was the natural result of using an adherent as strong as super glue, but it fueled paranoia even more that something is wrong with the balls being used this October. This wasn’t the first test in the Astros’ bullpen this postseason. Lance McCullers Jr., the Astros’ Game 3 starter slated to start a potential Game 7, recently turned his back to Astros pitching coach Brent Strom, who stuck a ball into McCullers’ hand with a question: regular-season ball or playoff ball? They repeated the exercise five more times, with three blue-stamped ...

clickholeofficial : Jeff Bezos Just Tossed A Nail-Studded Baseball Bat On The Floor Between The Mayors Of Pittsburgh And Kansas City And Asked Who Really Wants The Second Amazon HQ As Amazon executives review bids placed by cities who want to house the company’s second headquarters, it’s anyone’s guess who will win out. But we may now have a clue who the early frontrunners are: Tech insiders are reporting that Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos just tossed a nail-studded Baseball bat on the floor during a meeting with the mayors of Pittsburgh and Kansas City and asked them to prove how much they want the second Amazon headquarters. Industry experts say the civic leaders initially laughed off Bezos’ suggestion, but are now taking it seriously after the executive poured himself a glass of fine bourbon, took one long sip, and simply said, “Thousands of highly skilled jobs that will need filling.” According to reports, Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto was in the process of pleading with Bezos, insisting that surely there must be another way to decide this without appealing to man’s baser instincts, when Kansas City Mayor Sly James cut in to insist that neither man would ever consider harming the other, no matter how great the opportunity. James trailed off mid-sentence when Bezos rang a bell and the mayor of Tampa Bay entered the room on all fours like a dog, apparently blinded from a recent eye trauma, to shakily hand Bezos a cigar that the e-commer ...

Once again the weekend box office fell short of even the most dire predictions. This pre-Halloween weekend looks to be the second worst of the year. Initial tallies total $72 million. That’s down about 20 per cent from last year, which was the worst weekend of 2016. Read More: The Dead Zone: Why Halloween Is One of the Worst Box-Office Weekends Three New Flops This isn’t due to a lack of new product. Three studios released wide films this weekend: “ Jigsaw ,” Lionsgate’s eighth time around for the “Saw” franchise; George Clooney’s badly-reviewed “ Suburbicon ” from Paramount; and Middle- America-targeted “ Thank You for Your Service ” from Universal. Only “Jigsaw” showed a pulse, though at $16,250,000 it’s the lowest (ticket price adjusted) opening in the series. The earlier annual Halloween efforts (from 2004-2010) ranged from slightly better to $44 million. The most recent, “Saw 3D” debuted at $25 million. The other two newbies between them couldn’t muster $6 million. That’s against a combined pre-marketing cost of around $45 million, with little hope for any major international boost. These are dreadful numbers, though consistent with a string of duds that have dominated the release schedule with minor exceptions since Warners’ blockbuster “It” gave false hope with its strong early September release. “Suburbicon” Paramount knew they had a problem with “Suburbicon” based on critic pans out of Venice and Toronto (festival play ...

While it’ll be remembered for the play on the field, as the team reached the playoffs for the first time in six years, there were some lighter moments as well, and the video showcases these. Included among them are the rain-delay bowling game in Chicago, an avian effort to become part of a double-play [even our animal friends are not immune to the charms of Paul Goldschmidt , it would appear!], and the multiple different facets of PeraltaHighFiveGate, where an ongoing conspiracy of team-mates plotted to deny the Freight Train high-five privileges! Bruce Maxwell, the first, and to date only Major League Baseball player to kneel during the national anthem this season, has been arrested on a gun charge. Maxwell was catapulted to the headlines in sports back in September, not for any on-the-field accomplishments, but for taking a knee at a Baseball game. He tweeted out his intention to join NFL players in protest following President Trump referring to players who kneel as sons of bitches, and saying players should stand for the anthem. Don’t be surprised if you start seeing athletes kneeling in other sports now!! Comments like that coming from our president. WOW! The Oakland Athletic’s catcher was not reprimanded, rather, Major League Baseball rushed to issue the following statement on the matter: Major League Baseball has a longstanding tradition of honoring our nation prior to the start of our games. We also respect that each of our players is an individual with his own background, perspectives and opinions. We believe that our game will continue to bring our fans, their communities and our players together. Now, Maxwell is back in the news, as he is under arrest for allegedly pointing a gun at a female food delivery person in Scottsdale, Ariz. Scottsdale police said officers went to Maxwell’s home Saturday night after getting a call about a person with a gun, and he was later booked on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct. Only Major League Baseball player to kneel for anthem arrested on gun charge

Source: dennismichaellynch.com --- Sunday, October 29, 2017
Colin Kaepernick started a movement that spread throughout out the NFL — players taking a knee during the national anthem has been going on for more than a year now. And although the movement spread into amateur sports and politics, it only influenced one player in Major League Baseball. The Oakland Athletic’s catcher, Bruce Maxwell, has been the only Major League Baseball player to kneel during the national anthem this season. TMZ is reporting that the flag-protesting catcher has been arrested on a gun charge. Maxwell allegedly pointed a gun at a female food delivery person in Scottsdale, Arizona. Scottsdale police said officers went to Maxwell’s home Saturday night after getting a call about a person with a gun. Maxwell was booked on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct. Police said Maxwell was held in custody pending an initial appearance. By no means is Maxwell an all-star on the field. The knee-taking catcher, hit a mere .237 with just three home runs and 22 RBIs during the 2017 season. Whether he will continue to have a spot on the team after the arrest has not been determined. Last week, Maxwell claimed during a visit to his hometown of Huntsville, Ala., that he was refused service at a restaurant because of his protest. But a waiter told Fox News that Maxwell was “outright lying,” about what happened. “I didn’t even know who Bruce Maxwell was,” waiter Matt Henry said. The post Only Ma ...

Should the Rockies make Carlos González a qualifying offer?

Source: www.purplerow.com --- Sunday, October 29, 2017
Rockies news and links for October 29, 2017 Sunday Baseball notes | Boston Globe The 2017 post-season will come to an end this week, and with it the offseason festivities will begin. Among the Rockies ’ decisions is what to do with Carlos González. It seems almost self-evident that the Rockies won’t offer CarGo a $17.4 million qualifying offer. But Nick Cafardo writes that “the Rockies “are trying to decide on whether to make him a qualifying offer.” So, according to this, the Rockies are on the fence. It’s worthwhile to draw a comparison to the last time the Rockies made a qualifying offer to an impending outfield free agent. It also seemed self-evident that the Rockies wouldn’t offer Michael Cuddyer a QO after the 2014 season. But they did, and he turned it down. While useful, the Cuddyer/CarGo comparison isn’t perfectly analogous. First, while González is four years younger than Cuddyer was when he got his offer, Cuddyer had a much better season before he hit free agency. Despite his late season turnaround, CarGo still had his worst season as a professional. Second, the Rockies outfield is more crowded now than it was then. The year after Cuddyer turned the Rockies down, Brandon Barnes played in 106 games for the Rockies ( Drew Stubbs , Ben Paulsen , and Matt McBride also took a chunk of outfield reps). Looking to 2018, the Rockies have to be wondering how they’ll find playing time for David Dahl and Raimel Tapia. There doesn ...

Baseball players step up to the plate to fight for Puerto Rico's survival

Source: www.dailykos.com --- Sunday, October 29, 2017
Baseball, often called “as American as apple pie,” could also be as American as mofongo or arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas). The crisis taking place in Puerto Rico, where 3.5 American citizens are still mostly without electricity due to Donald Trump’s failure to marshal sufficient aid and recovery resources for the island, is ongoing. We have watched many celebrities, artists, entertainers, and members of communities on the mainland stepping up to the plate to raise funds, gather resources, and head to Puerto Rico to help out. Sports fans’ current focus is on the World Series being played between the Houston Astros (from a state also recovering from a disastrous hurricane) and the Los Angeles Dodgers (whose home state of California is still reeling from devastating wildfires). Let us not forget that they may be playing a game, but the reality for many Major League Baseball players is the continued suffering of friends and family members on the island. It should come as no surprise that from the sport dubbed “America’s Pastime,” players from Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and other parts of Latin America have come to the defense of their familia in Puerto Rico, a place where so many players have ties. Baseball, (or bĂ©isbol in Spanish) has deep historical roots on the island of Puerto Rico, and that history has helped shape what we know today as the Major Leagues, as well as international events like the World Baseb ...

Not that there's a new comer, but Lance has been known to steal the show. That's if by "the show" you mean "my pants" (heart eyes emoji). But in all seriousness, Lance stole my pants. Okay, I'm done with the buffoonery I pinkie swear! Below is the next 25 players on my big board for first year player drafts. Keep in mind, every league's scoring can be slightly different, so adjust accordingly, and use my words to guide you. I'm Prospect Mufasa. Onto picks 26-50! ...

Multiple sources say Trump “completely lost his mind” after he found out Mueller’s filed charges & now he’s “having an epic meltdown” #AMJoy — Scott Dworkin (@funder) October 28, 2017 I’m not proud, I love that all these cheezy bastids are having a very bad weekend. I hope it gets worse for them. In my more whimsical fantasies, Roger Stone is found beaten to death with a golf club monogrammed SH, and Bannon strokes out while breaking Kushner’s hyoid bone. As for their Dear (Figurehead) Leader — I want he should live a thousand years, and every day of his life be more miserable than the day before! Note the absurd horror of there being SO MANY shady conspirators within Trump's camp that we can't predict with confidence who was charged — Sarah Kendzior (@sarahkendzior) October 28, 2017 Roger Stone is handling tonight’s news like the dapper gentleman he is http://pic.twitter.com/trojChlac2 — Andrew Lawrence (@ndrew_lawrence) October 28, 2017 I think he’s been increasingly deranged for about 3-4 months I also think he may be at the center of nearly every Trump campaign illegality https://t.co/Ifo8eeqmFF — Dana Houle (@DanaHoule) October 28, 2017 Waiting until now to suspend this toxic set of hair plugs amounts to silencing a potential confession. http://pic.twitter.com/CnHg2QE4u0 — Zedward Tweeterhands (@ZeddRebel) October 28, 2017 Can we suspend @sebgorka next or would that be too much to ask? http://pic.twitter.com/4yNLttGiYY — Renato Mariotti (@renat ...

Whicker: Alex Wood turns a red-letter day Dodger blue

Source: www.ocregister.com --- Saturday, October 28, 2017
HOUSTON — His parents got engaged on Oct. 28. His fiancee Suze was born on Oct. 28. His friend Chance Veazey, his roommate at Georgia who was supposed to walk on Baseball fields with him forever, lost those dreams on Oct. 28, eight years ago. Alex Wood woke up Saturday with the date imprinted deep inside his head. He would pitch the essential game of his life on this Oct. 28, with one start under his belt since Sept. 26 and with his Dodgers a step behind the Astros in the World Series, and with Game 4 and 5 in a glassy, noisy ballpark where Houston had not lost in postseason. “My mind was racing,” Wood said. “I wouldn’t say I was calm.” Today it’s all about calm with athletes. The straighter face you maintain, the more prized you are. The people who run Baseball are trying to script it now, as much as the players try to play it. A chess piece just moves where it’s supposed to, expressionless. Wood believes in fate. He also seethes when he feels he is underestimated, which is often. He pitched well for the Braves and was traded, much to his surprise, and he had to fight his way out of the Dodgers’ bullpen and into the rotation, where he went 16-3 with a 2.72 ERA. Even then he became the fourth playoff starter, the guy who has one shot per series to leave an imprint. If the Dodgers win this championship, Wood may wind up on the sidewalk at Hollywood and Vine. He threw a no-hitter in Game 4, right up until his 84th and final pitch, ...

CSUF baseball loses first exhibition game 5-4 against UNLV

Source: dailytitan.com --- Saturday, October 28, 2017
Cal State Fullerton Baseball gained insight about what its fresh, new team still needs to improve before the 2018 season after falling 5-4 against University of Las Vegas in the Titans’ first exhibition game of the year. “They still have a long way to go,” said Titans Head Coach Rick Vanderhook. “I’d give us a C- for the day.” The bottom of the second is where the Titans gathered their first hit, courtesy of right outfielder Ruben Cardenas. With runners on second and third base, designated hitter Tyler Lasch’s hit to left field gave the Titans a one-run lead. UNLV’s offense outplayed the Titans’ defense after five scoreless innings, scoring one run each in the sixth and seventh. With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth and following a pitcher switch, Brett Conine took the mound and promptly give up the first home run of the game to UNLV’s Nick Ames. “I thought the infield caught the ball good. We didn’t make an error. We only walked two guys in 14 innings,” Vanderhook said. “We didn’t play very good in the outfield.” Pressure didn’t lighten up for the Titans after a double from UNLV brought in another runner followed by a home run giving UNLV a 5-2 advantage. The Titans ultimately lessened the deficit to 5-4 but was unable to close out. Still, second baseman Ryan Williams saw value in getting out on the field. “I think we played alright. I don’t think we executed all our at-bats as well as we should have,” Williams said. ...
