Cubs 2, Brewers 0: Sweep!

Source: www.bleedcubbieblue.com --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
Tyler Chatwood pitched — and hit! — the Cubs to victory. There has certainly been a lot of exciting Cubs Baseball over the last three-plus seasons. And yet, I don’t think I have enjoyed a weekend of regular-season Cubs Baseball more than the past four days, a four-game Cubs sweep of the Brewers that culminated Sunday afternoon with a well-pitched 2-0, two-hit shutout victory . At last, Tyler Chatwood showed the form that prompted Theo & Co. to sign him to a three-year contract this past offseason. One of the things that had hurt Chatwood in his previous starts was too many walks. His walk rate of 7.9 per nine innings prior to Sunday was nearly double his previous rate of 4.2. Sunday, Chatwood was in command through seven outstanding innings. He did issue three walks, but that’s more in line with his historic walk rate. Other than that, all he allowed was two singles, one by Ryan Braun in the first, the other by Christian Yelich in the third. Braun was erased on a double play, and after Yelich’s single, Chatwood retired 11 in a row until he walked Jesus Aguilar in the seventh. Another double-play ball bailed him out of that inning. That dropped his season walk rate down to 6.9, and I imagine it’ll continue to drop until it’s back to his career average. Meanwhile, Brewers starter Zach Davies was nearly matching Chatwood. The Cubs loaded the bases with two out in the second inning and Chatwood sent a ground ball up the middle that ...

Texas baseball team drops series finale at West Virginia 8-3

Source: www.hookem.com --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
A four-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning helped West Virginia secure an 8-3 victory over Texas on Sunday afternoon in Morgantown, W.Va. The Mountaineers (22-19, 6-9) took the Saturday and Sunday games after the Longhorns (30-17, 12-6) won the Big 12 series opener Friday night. Texas jumped on top Sunday with a pair of runs in the first inning. Masen Hibbeler walked and advanced to second on Duke Ellis’ bunt single. Zach Zubia reached on an error, with Hibbeler scoring, and David Hamilton’s RBI groundout made it 2-0. West Virginia responded with three runs in the fourth on Kyle Gray’s run-scoring groundout and RBI singles by Tyler Doanes and Connor Hamilton. The Mountaineers got another in the sixth on a wild pitch, but Texas closed the gap to 4-3 in the seventh on consecutive singles by Tate Shaw, Hibbeler and Ellis. The Horns let the game get away from them in the eighth as Doanes smacked a bases-loaded triple and scored on Andrew Zitel’s bunt. Isaiah Kearns (3-1) got the victory, pitching 6 1/3 innings and giving up three runs — two earned — on four hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Blair Henley (5-6) took the loss, giving up four earned runs on eight hits in six innings while striking out five and walking three. Texas will return home to face Texas State at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. ...

Six-Run Sixth Inning Powers UCLA Baseball Past Cal Poly Mustangs

Source: www.bruinsnation.com --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
The Bruins got a strong start from Zach Pettway as they got another series win. UCLA freshman pitcher Zach Pettway really made only one big mistake in his start yesterday against the Cal Poly Mustangs. Pettway went 6 2 ⁄ 3 innings for his seventh win of the season as the Bruins took the second straight game of this weekend’s series and earned UCLA the series win. Pettway really made only one big mistake and that came in the bottom of the fifth. After giving up singles to Colby Barrick and Scott Ogrin, Pettway gave up a 3-run home run to Alex McKenna which gave the Mustangs a 3-0 lead. But that lead was short-lived as the Bruin bats came alive in the top of the 6th. After a lead-off double to Daniel Amaral and a single to Garrett Mitchell, the Bruins had runners on the corners with no outs. Ryan Kreidler drove Amaral in to make it 3-1. Will McInerny laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Mitchell to third, but Cal Poly starter Darren Nelson threw it away, allowing Mitchell to score and Kreidler to get to third. After Jeremy Ydens walked to load the bases, Cal Poly Head Coach Larry Lee brought in Thomas Triantos to relieve for Nelson. But, Triantos threw a wild pitch to Kevin Kendall that scored Kreidler and moved the other runners up. Kendall went on to triple to left center to clear the bases and give the Bruins a 5-3 lead. After anothe Cal Poly pitching change, Chase Strumpf doubled, scoring Kendall. That gave the Bruins a 6-3 lead ...

Texas Longhorns baseball falls to West Virginia 8-3 in finale, drops critical series

Source: https://ift.tt/1bocU1l --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
The ‘Horns couldn’t hold an early 2-0 lead and dropped a key rubber match in Morgantown. Texas Longhorns Baseball (30-17, 12-6 Big 12) fell in the series finale rubber match to the West Virginia Mountaineers (22-19, 6-9 Big 12) 8-3 on Sunday afternoon in Morgantown. The ‘Horns may have lost more than just the series on Sunday -- the result puts both Texas’ hopes of hosting an NCAA regional and winning the Big 12 regular season championship in serious jeopardy. In a series that was marked by high scoring, Texas didn’t wait to strike first in game three. Masen Hibbeler opened the game with a lead off walk, and then Duke Ellis followed with a bunt single. After Kody Clemens grounded out, Zach Zubia reached on an error by the shortstop that scored Hibbeler. David Hamilton then notched an RBI groundout to make the score 2-0. Texas starter Blair Henley battled through three scoreless innings to hold the lead, but then ran into trouble in the fourth. Henley walked the lead off man and then allowed a double to put runners on second and third with no outs. An RBI groundout scored a run, and then three straight singles scored two more to make it 3-2 West Virginia. West Virginia tacked on another crucial run in the bottom of the sixth to bring the score to 4-2 after a wild pitch scored a runner from third with two outs. The ‘Horns fought back and came to the plate aggressive in the top of the seventh. Texas knocked three straight one-out s ...

Source: news.pioneergroup.com --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
Brethren’s Gavin Asiala hauls in a pop-up during the Brethren Invitational tournament on Saturday. The Bobcats lost both games in the tournament. (Kyle Kotecki/For the News Advocate) By KYLE KOTECKI For the News Advocate BRETHREN — The Brethren Baseball team played two games in a tournament on home soil Saturday, and proved gracious hosts, falling 2-3 to Grayling and 11-3 to Lake City. The Bobcats (3-3) had an impressive showing in their first game, taking a 2-0 advantage into the last half-inning before the Vikings strung together some hits and ended the game with a walk-off line drive to left field in a David-versus-Goliath matchup. Brethren Baseball coach Julie Riggs lamented her team’s chance to knock off a bigger school in the opener. “We had Grayling,” Riggs said. “We went into the bottom of the sixth with a 2-0 lead and that was spectacular. Class D against Class B. I was very proud of my boys in that game.” Jake Riggs was the starting pitcher, tallying five strikeouts in four innings pitched. “Jake came out and threw a super four innings for us and helped keep the game locked at zeros,” Riggs said. “We need to get bat support going. The guys just need to get a couple of hits in a row and have some contagious batting.” Jake Riggs also paced the Bobcats’ offense, batting 2-for-3. Beat the Streak Report

Source: www.baseballmusings.com --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
Regular readers of Baseball Musings are aware of the daily Beat the Streak Picks post. Today’s pick, Jean Segura , recorded a hit in his second plate appearance of day, completing 30 days of picks. The Neural Network got 27 of 30 right , when the probabilities it produced indicated an expectation of 22 correct. The probability of getting at least 27 right when the overall probability is 0.727 is 0.02. That means the result falls outside the 95% confidence interval. In other words, the Neural Network started the year with a very lucky streak. The ninety percent mark is interesting for another reason. A predictor with 90% accuracy would have a realistic chance of producing a 57 game streak. That is, you would have about a 1 in 5 chance of a 57 game streak each time you started a streak. The NN isn’t there. Small tweaks I’ve tried have not improved things. I suspect for the moment, 75% will be the best we can do. Maybe the luck will continue, but at some point I expect a big regression to the mean. ...

Yunique walks around her Brooklyn neighborhood in stylish, loose clothing that skims over her body and a gray shawl that's delicately draped around a Baseball cap. It's not evident right away that she is dressed modestly because she is Muslim. The only giveaway of her faith might be if she decides to share her last name with you: Saafir, which means ambassador in Arabic. She is 28 years old, born in Jamaica and now at home in Brooklyn. Saafir was first introduced to Islam when her mother converted to the Nation of Islam in Jamaica. She remembers being intrigued by how, all of the sudden, her mother seemed happier than ever before by going to the mosque in St. Catherine, Jamaica. One day, her mother sat her down to talk about her love for her newfound faith and invited her to come to the mosque with her if she wanted to. Recruit Commits To Play Baseball, Football At Big Ten School

Source: thespun.com --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
If you can play football or Baseball in the Big Ten, you must be pretty good. If you can play both, that’s even more impressive. This afternoon, three-star defensive end Adam Berghorst announced his commitment to Michigan State. Berghorst is a two-way lineman for Zeeland (Mich.) East. He’s also a two-sport star. Berghorst is a standout pitcher at Zeeland, and he’ll have the opportunity to play both sports in East Lansing. He shouted out both schools in his commitment announcement on Twitter. Blessed and proud to say I have committed to Michigan State University to play both football and Baseball! #GoGreen ⚔️✅ pic.twitter.com/Msueagh62a — Adam Berghorst (@adam_berghorst) April 29, 2018 As a football player, Berghorst is the No. 14 player in the state of Michigan according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. He’s also the 35th-ranked strong-side defensive end in the nation. Berghorst was offered by Boston College, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Purdue and others for football. He’s clearly a quality prospect on the gridiron. Now we’ll have to see whether his future ultimately lies there or on the Baseball diamond. Red Raider Ravioli: are two NFL draft picks enough for Texas Tech?

Source: www.vivathematadors.com --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
A bunch of thoughts after the show in Dallas Buongiorno! I am glad to have you here once again on RRR, the most useless VTM’s Sunday column! This week, I don’t want to talk about Baseball, despite there’s an important series taking place in Fort Worth, It was the NFL draft week, and I’m writing this after a substantial list of undrafted free agents already found a professional team. The Red Raiders that now have an NFL home (with the corresponding link to the dedicated VTM article) are: WR Keke Coutee - Houston Texans, 4th round, 103rd overall WR Dylan Cantrell - Los Angeles Chargers, 6th round, 191st overall WR Cameron Batson, UFA, Tennessee Titans QB Nic Shimonek, UFA, Los Angeles Chargers DT Mychealon Thomas, UFA, New York Jets WR Derrick Willies, UFA, Cleveland Browns RB Justin Stockton, UFA, Seattle Seahawks The first thing we can see is there are six offensive players, alongside only one defender. This was somehow predictable, as Texas Tech is well-known for its offense rather than its defense, but there’s also to say that there were ten players that performed in the Pro Day, with only seven with some possibilities to receive a contract, and Mych was the only defender. By the way, all of these seven reached the goal: well done! Michael C. Johnson-USA TODAY Sports That said, I have to admit I’m surprised that only two Red Raiders were selected during the seven rounds of the draft. I didn’t have many hopes for Willies , Stoc ...

Closing Remarks: MLB Closer Report for Week 4

Source: www.faketeams.com --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
Matt takes a look at what changed in the closer landscape in fantasy Baseball over the past week. Another week down in the fantasy Baseball season and the ever changing closer landscape still continues to shift. We have seen a few pitchers solidify shaky ground while others have started to walk on a tight rope. New committees have started to pop-up while old committees have started to dissipate. Every week I will break down what changed in the land of fantasy Baseball relief pitching as well as update my closer tiers. Let’s take a look at the news and notes in this week’s Closing Remarks: MLB Closer Report. The Welcoming Commitee A new week has brought fantasy owners brand new closer committees to worry about in Atlanta and possibly Miami. Arodys Vizcaino has done a great job up to this point and has recorded four of the Braves ’ five saves this season to go with a 1.42 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. Who would be unhappy with that? Apparently the Atlanta Braves manager Brian Snitker who decided to toss left-handed A.J. Minter into the ninth to closeout a game vs. the Reds this past week. It’s tough to see lefty A.J. Minter running away with the job due to the fact that it is just plain tough for a left-handed pitcher to be a closer. He does have end game stuff and was called upon to get the save vs. the Reds when two left-handed batters (Votto and Gennett) led off the inning. I think it may be a situational two-man committee for the time be ...

Review of "Everything I Know I Learned from Baseball"

Source: sportsbookguy.blogspot.com --- Sunday, April 29, 2018
This was a different collection of essays - ones that not only told about Baseball, but also had some helpful advice for various situations one will face in life.  Nice to know that such a great sport can be useful too!  Here is my review of "Everything I Know I Learned from Baseball." Title/Author: “ Everything I Know I Learned From Baseball” by Phillip Theibert Tags: Baseball, life, essays Publish date: December 15, 2017 Length: 160 pages Rating:  4 of 5 stars (very good) Review: Some people say that Baseball reflects life or similar phrases in order to convey the message that many of Baseball’s nuances are also found in “real life.”   This is clearly evident with the messages passed to the readers of this book by Phillip Theibert. The basic premise of the book is that the solutions to solve many situations a Baseball player or coach will face apply to issues in real life as well.   Whether one is trying to improve his or her work performance, relationships, optimism or just improve this book will help the reader see how Baseball can be used to do so. To demonstrate this, I will use one of the many ways the author ties Baseball and a real life situation. During a game and especially during a plate appearance, a batter will try to figure out the spin of a pitcher’s curveball and how it differs from the fastball. He has to concentrate on the very minute details in order to gain the edge over the pitcher.   Theibert encourages the ...

Dodgers break out in first game but lose nightcap to split doubleheader with Giants

Source: www.ocregister.com --- Saturday, April 28, 2018
SAN FRANCISCO –Thirteen hours after the players reported to the ballpark to play seven hours’ worth of Baseball, a light rain briefly fell on AT&T Park Saturday night. No doubt Dave Roberts could have found a silver lining even in those clouds. “It’s a tough month for us,” the Dodgers manager said after his team split Saturday’s doubleheader with the San Francisco Giants, once again failing to gain any positive traction on this season. “The solace is that no one’s making excuses and we’re playing hard. Guys are trying to make pitches. It’s just not happening right now. That’s encouraging. It really is.” Roberts might land on the DL with a strained oblique reaching for positive signs in the fact that “no one’s making excuses” about the way the Dodgers have underachieved over the past month. But he insists there is value in that “when you’re playing and you’re getting beat and you’re not playing up to your abilities but you’re looking at yourself in the mirror and saying, ‘We’ve got to get better’ as opposed to making excuses about why you’re not winning.” That’s just as well — it would be hard to pin things down to one explanation. Saturday was another example of the Dodgers showing progress only to slide back into sluggish play. In the first game, the Dodgers’ offense pounded the Giants for season-highs in hits (20) and runs, backing Walker Buehler in a 15-6 defeat. But in the second game, the Dodgers went quietly, managing just ...

Tomase: Hall of Famer Barry Larkin watches son contribute for Celtics, won't give up on baseball

Source: www.weei.com --- Saturday, April 28, 2018
Barry Larkin won a World Series and an MVP award with the Reds before entering the Baseball Hall of Fame, but as he celebrated his 54th birthday in Boston on Saturday, he considered an athletic achievement that eluded him. Playing in a Game 7. The 1990 Reds beat the Pirates in six games before sweeping the A's in the World Series. Larkin's 1995 Reds swept the Dodgers before being swept by the Braves in the NLCS. His son, Shane, however, was about to play in the family's first winner-take-all playoff game and Barry Larkin, 12-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glover, felt butterflies. "I told him I didn't want to put any pressure on him, but a win for pops on his birthday would be good," Barry Larkin told WEEI.com after the Celtics thrashed the Bucks to advance to the Eastern Conference semifinals. "They came through and it was great." Shane Larkin played a valuable supporting role in the 112-96 victory with eight points, two assists, and a steal in 15 minutes. He was a plus-11 and drilled the 3-pointer with 51 seconds left that prompted broadcaster Mike Gorman to declare: "Ballgame." So what's it like for a Hall of Famer in one sport watch his son attempt to excel in another? Kareem Elgazzer/USA Today Sports "It's unbelievable, man," Barry said. "The feeling is one of elation, humility, and amazement. I'm sitting there, watching him compete with these monsters every single day, it amazes me." One of the premier point guards in t ...

What Mississippi State’s lineup construction in win over Texas A&M says about Bulldogs

Source: sports.usatoday.com --- Saturday, April 28, 2018
Mississippi State’s Luke Alexander hits against Ole Miss Tuesday, April 24, 2018, in the Governors Cup Baseball game at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss. STARKVILLE — Inside Gary Henderson’s office during the afternoon hours, the Mississippi State interim head coach along with hitting coach Jake Gautreau made the lineup decisions that helped Mississippi State beat Texas A&M, 11-6, Saturday night. The meeting one day after the Bulldogs lost the opener (6-3) of the critical series was brief, yet it proved to be impactful. The notable changes: Rowdey Jordan would bat second, marking the first time his name was anywhere other than No. 9 in the order all season. Marshall Gilbert would start for the third-straight game at catcher, marking only the second time that has happened this season. Luke Alexander would move from No. 2 — where he had batted every game since March 17 — to cleanup, and Hunter Stovall would move down from No. 4 to No. 5. Justin Foscue would start after sitting out Friday’s game and play third base for the first time since April 7 in place of Jordan Westburg. The Bulldogs scored more than 10 runs in an SEC game for the second time this season, and took a 6-0 lead in the third with six runs in that frame. Jordan went 3 for 4 with two runs. Foscue hit a two-RBI double in the third. Gilbert went 1 for 2 with one RBI and two walks. Alexander added an RBI. Stovall was 3 for 5 with one RBI.  But here’s the interesting thing ...

Texas baseball rides late inning surge to defeat West Virginia 11-6

Source: https://ift.tt/1bocU1l --- Saturday, April 28, 2018
The Longhorns scored eight unanswered runs to notch their 12th come from behind victory on the season The No. 19 Texas Longhorns (30-15, 12-4 Big 12) came back from down 6-3 to defeat the West Virginia Mountaineers (20-19, 4-9 Big 12) by the final score of 11-6 Friday night at Monongalia County Ballpark in Morgantown, WV. A six-run seventh inning and four no-hit innings of relief from Matthew Whelan helped the Longhorns mount another late comeback win on the season. After a 1-2-3 inning for West Virginia, Texas ace Nolan Kingham got the start and took the mound for the ‘Horns. Kingham would give up the first run of the ballgame in the first inning after allowing the first two batters to respectively record a single and a triple. Kingham would strand a runner at third, getting the next three Mountaineers to pop up, strike out, and ground-out to end the first. Scoring wouldn’t open again until the third inning. After Kingham labored through the second, the Texas pitcher ran into more trouble in the third. Two singles with one out put WVU runners on the corners. A failed pick-off attempt from Kingham to first base resulted in error that scored the runner from third, pushing the WVU lead to 2-0. After a 51 minute lightning delay, play would resume, and Kingham would get out of the inning without surrendurring another run. The Longhorns would finally get on the board in the fourth inning. After another lightning delay (this one only ...

Republican Says GOP Mass Retirement Is Due to Fear of Assassination

Source: constitution.com --- Saturday, April 28, 2018
It was nearly a year ago that all Hell broke loose on a Baseball field in the Washington D.C. suburbs, with a radical leftist agitator perched on a hill taking potshots at public servants. That man was James T. Hodgkinson, an avowed liberal whose internet browsing history read like something out of a modern Alfred Hitchcock plot. On social media, Hodgkinson presented himself as a Sanders supporter and a longtime critic of Republicans, particularly Trump. (Sanders said in a statement that Hodgkinson had volunteered on his campaign.) Hodgkinson’s Facebook profile was linked to his listed telephone number. “Trump is a Traitor,” Hodgkinson wrote in a May 22 Facebook post above a Change.org petition to remove Trump and Vice President Mike Pence for treason. “Trump Has Destroyed Our Democracy. It’s Time to Destroy Trump & Co.” On Facebook, he was a member of groups including “Terminate the Republican Party,” “The Road To Hell Is Paved With Republicans,” “Donald Trump is not my President,” and “Memic Overlords.” He recently became particularly vocal, posting anti-Trump messages multiple times a day over two Facebook accounts. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports he attacked Republican congressional candidate Karen Handle, writing on Facebook: “Republican Bitch Wants People to Work for Slave Wages, when a Livable Wage is the Only Way to Go!” Hodgkinson’s brother told The New York Times he was distraught by Trump’s victory. “I know h ...

No Puerto Rico hangover. No Yankee Mystique. No excuses at home against the worst team in Baseball. Make no bones about it, the Twins are simply playing terribly right now. They were leading 8-4, but the wheels completely fell off in what was a six-run fifth inning for the Reds. The Twins have now lost eighth-straight games. Snapshot (chart via FanGraphs ) Download attachment: Snapshot427.png Download attachment: WinEx427.png I honestly don’t know what to say. If you watched this game, you’re either here because you’re glutton for punishment or you just came to voice your frustrations in the comments (if that’s the case, by all means do so). If you didn’t watch the game, first off congratulations. Secondly, it may be best to just pretend like there was no Twins game on April 27, 2018. Ignorance is bliss. Here we go, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Phil Hughes gave up a solo homer in the top of the first, but the Twins’ offense exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning. Twins Territory was rejoicing to see the bats finally seem to break out. The big hit in that first frame was a Logan Morrison two-run homer, so the positive vibes were really flowing. It was a simpler time. Hughes really struggled to hit his spots and lasted just 3 2/3 innings, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks. At this point, I don’t know how management can justify giving Hughes another start. The bats added a few more runs, with Robbie Grossma ...

Because young women can’t be expected to have agency over their own bodies in this, Year Of Our Lord Two Thousand And Eighteen, yet another dad is making headlines because of the old shotgun “joke.” Brian Kemp, who is running to become Georgia’s next governor, can be seen gripping a shotgun with his cold, dead hands in his latest political ad. This is an actual commercial aimed at constituents to sway them into voting for a governor who thinks it’s a riot to threaten teenagers with guns for purely sexist reasons. Note the many guns on display in what appears to be Kemp’s home. There are guns and ammo on the tables, and even a few sprinkled around a barrel thingy in the background — aside from the one cocked and aimed at poor “Jake” here. After rattling off a few boilerplate reasons why he wants to be governor, Kemp makes “Jake” wrap up the ad by sharing some thoughts about the second amendment. Just in case sitting inside his Guns ‘R Us basement wasn’t enough to clue us in, Brian Kemp is a big fan of firearms. (Which is fine, if you use them responsibly . Something he doing the opposite of here.) He makes Jake agree if he goes on a date with one of Kemp’s daughters, “respect and a healthy appreciation for ...

Sean Manaea and destiny might be colliding for good this time

Source: www.sbnation.com --- Saturday, April 28, 2018
Saturday’s Say Hey, Baseball looks at, you guessed it, Sean Manaea and destiny. Imagine for a moment, if you will, an enactment of the phrase “taking candy from a baby.” Now, imagine it taken a step further, and the candy-taker then plays keep-away from the baby. That scene is what Sean Manaea’s 14-inning no-hit streak, which runs across three games and breaks a franchise record, looked like, with (very good) hitters playing the part of the baby, and hits playing the part of the candy. Exactly seven days ago, Manaea withheld hits from Baseball’s hottest team for a full game. The Red Sox were on a merry eight-game win streak before he dealt them only their third loss all season. Friday, six days later against the Astros, he skipped no beats and took no names, delivering three more innings of no-hit stuff. Astros hitters greeted Manaea with waving bats, as he struck out seven across seven-innings. Manaea’s night ended with four-hits and one-run allowed, leaving his season ERA at 1.03. Houston doesn’t have as many wins to show for it, but they have scored only 11 fewer runs than Boston and sit just behind them in fWAR in team batting. Essentially, these are some big babies Manaea has toyed with. Manaea is only 26 years old in his third season in the majors. Blossoming with this kind of performance is quite a way to do it, even for a second-round draft pick who quickly slotted himself at the top of Kansas City’s prospect pool. He pr ...
